Friends of Santa Teresa Park Zoom Meeting, 4/2/26

    • This was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting link for this Zoom meeting.
    • Attendees: Mike Boulland, Ron Horii.
    • We are going to have a work day tomorrow 4/3/26 at 9:00 at the Bernal Ranch. We will meet at the chicken coop. Possible tasks:  Shovel mushroom compost into garden beds, brush old paint off the benches, re-paint outside benches, clean out water drains, pick up leaves and brush. Mike plans to get free mushroom compost from Monterey Mushrooms and bring them to the workday. If there's extra compost, it can be stored on a tarp in back of the garden boxes. David and Youngmee will be out of town.
    • Ron showed pictures:
      • 3/6/26: We had our FOSTP First Friday Workday. We pulled or cut weeds in and around the garden boxes and planter boxes by the ranch house, by the parking lot entrance, and the bark by the picnic tables. Afterwards, we had a picnic lunch, with pizza from Bossman's Pizza.
      • 3/15/26: CNPS hiked the Stile Ranch, Mine, and Fortini Trails, looking for wildflowers. We saw lots of wildflowers and 2 rattlesnakes.
      • 3/24/26: Hike from the Bernal Ranch, Santa Teresa Spring, Gulnac Trail, Bear Tree Lot, Pyzak House, Norred Ranch, Norred. Looked at conditions.
      • 3/29/26: Looked for areas that need work at the Bernal Ranch.
    • Katrina Semene, Extra Help Park Interpreter, sent a note with updates about the deparement:
      • Brandi Stover has been brought in as the new Specialty Parks Manager. She will oversee Martial Cottle Park, Field Sports Park, and Motorcycle Park. Joanna Piedmont, who previously filled this position while Sabine was away, has stepped back into her Rangemaster role at Field Sports.
      • La Fuente has been cancelled. The difficult decision was made in consideration of event needs and staff availability. The Fall season is filled with many events and programs, and our Operations staff determined that they are unable to support it. If the event is revived in the future, then the program may not be in the same format or time of year.
    • Since La Fuente was canceled, we need another event in place of it. On 9/13/26, there will be a Viva Calle SJ event. The route includes Martial Cottle Park as an activity hub. We may be able to have an information booth there and pass out newsletters. We can do a new newsletter for the event, just like we intended to do for La Fuente. We need to find out how we can get a booth. We may be able to partner with NAQCPA, who may also be interested in a booth.
    • Davud has been using Quickbooks Online to keep track of our account. It costs $450 to renew the subscription. He could switch to Quicken, which costs $100, one time only. The grant won't pay for it.
    • Beautify San Jose Grant:
      • Cycle 7 closed on March 31, 2026. We under-spent for Cycle 7 in all categories, except for Events, where we over-spent by $7. We will need to give back $287.99 in unspent funds to the city.
      • The final report for Cycle 7 is due 4/30/26. It's almost ready. Mike just needs to calculate the volunteer hours.
      • Cycle 8 begins 4/1/26 and ends 3/31/27. For Cycle 8, we requested $1500. We were approved to get $1330. We don't know what didn't get approved, but the difference is $170, which is the cost of our Zoom subscription. Maybe it's not a covered expense. We won't know until we get the MOU. Based on last year, we may have to wait until June to get the check. Until we receive the check, we have only $41.55 in our checking account. Any personal expenses will need to wait for reimbursement until we get the grant money.
    • David has been working on our 501c3 application. One thing to find out is whether we need to get D&O insurance, which is not covered by our grant.
    • We need to update our work plan and get it approved. We can use our old work plan and add the Pyzak House.
    • We need to respond to the Unused Structures Report that was presented at the previous Parks Commission meeting. We should see about getting a tour of the Door House.
    • 4/25/26 is the County Parks Volunteer Recognition party at Hellyer from 12-3. Volunteers who are in the Samaritan system should have received invitations.
    • Our "Mothers and Flowers" hike has been approved. It will be on May 9, 2026 from 9-12 at the Stile Ranch entrance. Mike and Ron will be leading it. We need speakers to portray historical characters. We need to find out who will be available.
