Friends of Santa Teresa Park Meeting Minutes for 9/4/03

  • Meeting attendees: Mike Boulland, Ronald Horii, Kitty Monahan, Lynne Paulson, Holly Davis, Lynne Paulson, John Klimaszewski, Steve Crockett, Hazen Anderson
  • Lynne Paulson:
    • Lynne talked about the proposed Nakashima subdivision development in the Santa Teresa Hills above Snell. The proposal is to sub-divide the property, which can allow more houses to be built. There was a County Supervisor's meeting scheduled on 8/19 to discuss it, but it was postponed to 9/23. The City wrote a letter to the County about its concerns. They mentioned the Coyote-Alamitos Canal Trail. The Open Space Authority will meet with the property owner and Supervisor Don Gage to discuss the property.
    • The lawsuits against the Open Space Authority are nearly settled. There is 1 clause left to settle.
    • The Santa Teresa Foothills Neighborhood Association will have a meeting on 10/30 in the evening. They will have a speaker from the Audubon Society.

    • Balance: $854.80
    • We will spend about $350 on the Mounted Ranger Open House.
  • We are not a 5013c. We are a non-profit corporation, but are not tax-exempt. To do so requires a fee, by-laws, and a constitution. The Santa Teresa Foothills Neighborhood Association is a 5013c. So is the New Alamaden Quicksilver County Park Association. They can give us advice.
  • Hazen wants to work on getting a Clampers plaque for Santa Teresa Springs. It will cost about $13K at most.
  • 4H (Holly):
    • 4H is having a hard time finding a place to meet. San Anselmo School is closed. They need a free place to meet. They have about 40 members.
  • Pyzak's: the County wants to get someone to live in there for now. Later we can push for funding to allow community groups to use the property.
  • Parks Commission (Kitty): There was a presentation on the interpretive program. There was a lot about the BGJ Ranch. They didn't talk about the volunteers, however.
  • Activities:
    • Mars Night was on August 29. A lot of people showed up.They watched a movie in the barn and looked at Mars through a telescope.
  • Mike will talk to Joe Schultz to discuss the process of getting our events covered by the parks department. It shouldn't be by getting permits, which are 1-time events and cost money. John Goldsworthy writes the permits.
  • Mike met with Alan Leventhal, who is excited about getting out the story of the Native Americans here. He talked about the Muwekmas and gave Mike some good literature. Mike also got a book from Donna Gillette on American rock art.
  • 9/27 is also the day of the Santa Teresa Community Fest.
  • Mike and Dorene went through the Trail Watch Academy.
  • Steve: there are 6 Trail Crew leads. They do trail events. There are 3 events set up for the Stiles Ranch Trail. Each trail group does 3 events. They have the leaders. They need workers. Greg Bringelson handles the trails. Beeny Sanders gets the volunteers. They mostly work on the trail itself, re-building the trail. The Adopt-a-Trail groups do clipping and trail clean-up.
  • Fantasy of Lights at Vasona at Christmastime needs 2 volunteers a night at the exit. Mike and Holly said they'd help.
  • Mounted Ranger Facility at Buck Norred's, Open House 9/27, 12 pm to 2 pm.
    • Friday 9/5 from 4-6, 4H will come over to Holly's. They got some free used horseshoes that they will give away at the open house. They need help cleaning them and pulling out the nails. Kitty will give out the horseshoes.
    • Mike filled out a form to get UNSCC to cover the open house. The event is a park event.
    • Mike met with Julie, the ranger at Buck's. This was their 4th meeting.
    • This will be an informal open house, not a dedication or formal reception. The public will get a chance to meet the rangers.
    • The open house starts at noon and ends at 2 pm. We will start setting up at 10:00.
    • We will bring tents, umbrellas, hay bales for seating (around 24).
    • There will be a BBQ with hot dogs. Holly and her family will do the cooking. Holly will buy the food.
    • Dorothy will bring a tent. She'll man the FOSTP table and handle sign-ins.
    • Mike will talk about the history of Buck's. Rick will also be there.
    • Parking will be on top of the hill. Steve will handle parking. Beeny is looking for 5 people to handle parking. People will be shuttled down. Art will drive the van. We had some concerns about whether the road up the hill would be able to handle the traffic.
    • There will be a sign at the Community Fest about the open house.
    • We can get ice from Carl's Jr. We need ice chests. They need to be at Buck's at 10:00.
