-
This was a special followup meeting with a large community turnout because
of concerns about access to the former Buck Norred Ranch, now the Mounted
Ranger Unit. See last month's meeting
summary for more details.
-
Ron Horii summarized the issues from the May meeting.
-
Ron Horii showed slideshows showing a maps and diagrams of the areas, Joe
Schultz surveying the Coyote-Alamitos Canal at the Mounted Ranger Unit
area, the Mine Trail, the Coyote-Alamitos Canal, and potential new trail
routes. Some of these pictures are on the Webpage
of the Norred Ranchsite area.
-
Deputy Parks Director Joe Schultz talked about the Park Department's plans
for the Norred Ranch Area
-
Brockenhurst Drive is not designated by the environmental permit as a public
access point. The Mounted Ranger Unit uses it as a service drive.
-
A new access will be created along Heaton Moor Drive about 0.3 miles or
3 blocks down, across from Bernal School.
-
A new trail will cross the Coyote-Alamitos Canal and run up the hill on
switchbacks. It will go behind the Mounted Ranger Unit and hook up to the
Mine Trail.
-
Outside contractors will be hired to build the trail, as park resources
are tied up.
-
The open field at the Bernal Road entrance to the park may become a staging
area. This could help reduce some of the traffic along Heaton Moor.
-
A new master plan will be created for the area of the undeveloped area
of the park, including the Bear Tree Lot, Pyzak Ranch, and Bonetti Ranch.
This is slated to become an interpretive area. The planning will begin
in Fall of 2006. Public meetings will be convened to discuss it.
-
A 5-strand round-wire fence will be put up around both ends of the Coyote-Alamitos
Canal and up the hill above the houses on Heaton Moor whose property includes
the canal and part of the hillside above. (There are 11 homes on this part
of Heaton Moor, 9 of which back up to the canal.) The fence will not be
continuous along the hillside. It will go in about 25 feet from the ends.
-
The old access road from Brockenhurst Drive to the old ranch buildings
on the west side of the site will be torn out above the canal.
-
A junk pile near the bottom of this road, which is was placed on private
property by park personnel, will be removed.
-
Access gates will allow neighbors to reach their backyards along the canal
to cut down weeds for fire prevention. (The Fire Marshall may require this.)
-
Many of the attendees wanted to keep using the Brockenhurst Drive gate
as an entry point for pedestrians and bicyclists.
-
Cynthia Greenblatt pointed out that the access road to the Mounted Ranger
Unit is owned by the Water District. They granted a permit for the county
to use it. The permit says that the County would improve the road for Mounted
Ranger access, but it would be closed to the public. Cynthia expressed
concern about the daily traffic going in and out of the Mounted Ranger
Unit and said that the permit did not allow it.
-
Since the private property around the Coyote-Alamitos Canal is not part
of the park, the Mounted Rangers have no jurisdiction there. Mike Boulland
recommended that the neighbors around the Mounted Ranger Unit organize
a park watch or neighborhood watch to patrol the area themselves. The City
of San Jose can help them to organize.
-
Mary Berger is an interpretive ranger at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch.
She is a former teacher and instructional designer. She is working on an
educational program for kindergarten and 1st graders.
-
A docent guide will be coming to the ranch in about a month.
-
Around September, they will have a teaching guide online, tied to California
educational standards. It will be on the Bernal Ranch. They will also have
one for Chitactac Adams and Almaden Quicksilver.
-
Miek Boulland wants to wash the outside walls of the Bernal Ranch house.
Volunteers should meet him at the ranch house on 6/26 at 10 am.
-
Rose got in trouble for walking her dog at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch.
The trails of Santa Teresa Park are open to dogs, but the ranch site is
an historical area that has restrictions. It needs to be clarified where
dogs are allowed to go. They can go to Santa Teresa Spring. A dog scoop
bag dispenser should be put at the bottom of the Joice Trail.
-
There will be a science fiction movie and stargazing night at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice
Ranch on the evening of Saturday, June 26 from 8:00 to 10:30 pm. Call to
make reservations (408-226-5453).
